Tensions in society are minimal as most Paraguayans are of combined Spanish and native Guaranφ origin. The majority are bilingual, although outside the large cities, Guaranφ is spoken almost exclusively. Most people live in the southeast. The vast and almost empty Chaco is home to two-thirds of the small number of indigenous Indians, who legally own their lands but do not have control of them in practice.
